Eagle's Point Tournament Recap (Hilton Head-Savannah Tour)

Low Scores and Playoffs!
Eagle’s Pointe in Bluffton was the host course for the fourth tournament of the season for the Hilton Head-Savannah Tour. The weather for the day was absolutely amazing. The sun was shining, the gators were sunbathing, and the golfers were ready to play. With all the happiness going around today, you had to figure that low scores were going to shot. You figured correct.

The Championship flight saw four very competitive golfers competing for the first place points, money, trophy and bragging rights. When the four golfers walked off the green there were only 2 shots separating first from fourth; just two shots. Adam Dozier fired the low round in the champ flight with a 78 on the day. Danny Nash and David Politi tie for second with rounds of 79 while Vince Davis rounds out the group with an 80. Great playing from all the champ flight guys and congratulations on such a competitive round.

The A flight consisted of six golfers today. Again the scores were low and competitive amongst the group. Randall Webb and Mark Harrison came into the clubhouse with 3-over rounds of 75 on the day. So off to a playoff they went. After two playoff holes Randall came back in as the winner of the A flight. Rounding out the top three was Terry Lennox with a 77.

Continuing with the low scores and playoffs the B flight followed suit. With ten golfers competing today in the B flight the battle was on. After all the B flight players were in Taron McKowen and Devon Melone were tied, each with an 80 on the card. So off to number one they headed. When the playoff was finished Taron walked away as the winner. Pat Helm continues her solid play and claims third place.

The C flight didn’t want to be left out of the low scores and playoffs. KC Andrews was playing well all day until hole 12 where he had a rough stretch going. He was ready to throw in the towel when he was encouraged to keep it together and finish strong. With the new confidence he finished strong and was tied with Michael Kline with rounds of 87. So a third playoff was needed. By the time the two came off the playoff hole Michael was the winner. Jess Haynes finished third on the day.

The D flight saw Brain Gale make it two in a row with his win today. Battling six golfers in the D flight, Brain was able to put together a solid round of 93 to take a three shot win over George Story and Todd Champitto. Great playing by Brian had him all smiles after the round and taking home his second trophy of the season.

What a great great day for the Golfweek Amateur Tour. Every tournament we have had this season has had playoffs to decide the winners in some of the flights. As Pat Helm put it “It just goes to show you how competitive these guys are.” Everyone wants to win. Everyone wants to play well. With the weather getting warmer, I’m sure the golf will continue to get better and the scores will be amazing.

Our next event will be March 12th and Penny Branch. This is a combo event with the Charleston Tour and is also the second major of the season. Sign up early to secure your spot in the tournament.

Hilton Head-Savannah Tour Player Of The Week (Feb. 12, 2011)

Brian Gale (“D” Flight)

Our player of the week for February 12 is Brian Gale. Brian comes to us from Springfield, MA but now resides in Pooler, GA. Brain is a “True Hero” serving our country in the US Army as a Kiowa Warrior Pilot. Brian has been playing golf for about three years and hopes to one day retire from the Army and pursue a career in golf. He would like to be an instructor or in golf management somewhere in Arizona. Brian joined the Hilton Head-Savannah Tour to meet other “Golf Addicts” that love to play this glorious game. His goal for the future is to break 80. We are sure he will accomplish this goal.

Brian played in his first Hilton Head-Savannah Tournament at Crescent Pointe and fired a 98. This put him in a tie with George Story so a playoff ensued. Brian won the playoff on the first hole. What a first tournament, a playoff and a win! “The sand wedge I hit from 20 yards out on 17 to within three feet was what won the tournament for me” said Brian. I am sure this will be the first win in many to come on tour.

Charleston Tour Player Of The Week (February 12)

George King ("B" Flight)

This is George's second year playing on the Charleston Tour and in that time he has amassed a good resume with (3) regular season tour wins and (2) pre-season wins. George originally hails from Houston, TX but has lived in Mt. Pleasant, SC for the last 35 years. He is an active member at Charleston National GC and is well known in the Charleston area for his steady solid play. George used (2) birdies on his way to a blistering 75 to capture the win at Edisto. "I guess the shot that kept my round going was the 20 footer I made for bogey on #3. I had failed to get out of the bunker not once but twice. By making that putt, my putting stats were kept intact. I had no three putts and six (1) putt greens. You can say, my putter was hot from the start." George has recommended the tour to many players and says "the tour is a great way to meet some great people and enjoy not only the freindship but also the competition. The tour is made up of some really super guys."

Edisto Plantation Course Tournament Recap (Charleston Tour)

Sunny Day Plus Great Course Equals Great Scores!
The Plantation Course at Edisto Island played host to the Charleston Tour’s third tournament of the young 2011 season. The course was in great shape and the weather was perfect as thirty-two golfers took to the course in search of that elusive win.
The Championship Flight had the lowest number of entrants with one player till Adam Daniel of the “A” Flight stepped up to play in Championship Flight and give Matt McInnis some competition. In the end, Adam shot a 79 to take the first place Championship Flight Trophy. Matt finished in second with an 87. Adam was awarded second place points in the “A” flight for his play.
The “A” Flight’s Dan Wanner overpowered the course and shot a blistering 74 to capture the “A” Flight title. This was Dan’s first tournament and win on the Charleston Tour. Second place went to Mark Ducker who carded a smooth 79.
The “B” Flight saw a familiar face hoisting the trophy at the end of the day. George King fired a 75 to pace the field. James Ravenel came in second place with a solid 83. Third place was captured by Michael Graham with an 84.
The “C” Flight also saw a familiar face hoisting the trophy. Richard Cairns shot a solid 81 to capture first place. Richard was followed closely by Marlon Jones who fired an 87 and David Mays who cruised in with a 93. This was Richard’s second win of the 2011 season.
A perennial Charleston Tour member came thru with an impressive 91 to capture the “D” Flight. Cowboy who has been a member on the Charleston Tour since its beginning used steady play to hoist the “D” Flight trophy. Tour newcomer Wayne Carter was right on Cowboy’s heels with a solid 95 to take second place.
The Charleston Tour’s next tournament is on February 26 at Coosaw Creek GC. We look forward to seeing everyone there. Be sure to keep up with the tour on its Facebook page. Prizes and specials will be ran throughout the year!

Crescent Pointe Tournament Recap (Hilton Head-Savannah Tour)

The Course That Fought Back,

Crescent Pointe in Bluffton was the host course for the third tournament of the GolfWeek Amateur Tour season. The weather for the tournament was great; for February. A slight breeze was present all day long but the sun was shining and that helped keep the temperature at a comfortable level. A total of 40 golfers decided to attack the course today; little did they know they course was ready to put up a fight of its own.

The Championship Flight saw a season high six golfers compete for the first place trophy, points and prizes. With only two strokes separating the top three guys, you knew it was a good round. At the end of the day Robert Wyrick was able to hold off Danny Nash and Adam Dozier to claim the top spot. Wyrick used “4 3-putts and no birdies” to secure a 6-over 77 round. Danny Nash comes in second with a 78 and Adam Dozier rounds out the top three with a 79.

The A flight saw seven golfers compete today. After all the A flight golfers were in, it turned out to be another close group. Jimmy Turner was able to go 38-43 on the day to fire an 81 and secure the top spot. Jimmy’s 81 was one shot better than Mark Harrison who went 42-40 to finish with an 82. Rounding out the top three was Steve Roberts and his round of 84.

The biggest flight on the day was the B flight. With 13 golfers in the flight the prize money was bigger than it has been all season. With only two players breaking the 90 barrier and no birdies posted in the B flight, you knew it was a tough day. Craig Ehde was the low man on the day with a round of 87. Following close behind was Taron McKowen and his round of 88. Rounding out the top three was Scott Ammons and his round of 90.

The C flight had a lot of fireworks today. With a total of 9 golfers playing today, the competition was bound to be good. And it was just that, good. Joe Lee was the first C flight player in and he set the bar high, or low depending on which way you look at it. Joe fired a round of 85 to take the lead in the clubhouse. About 2-hours later John Donat came in with an 85 as well. Off the the course they went for the playoff. Two holes later John Donat walked off the green victorious. Rounding out the top three were Bob Wagner (88) and Jess Haynes (personal tournament best 88).

The fireworks weren’t only for the C flight. The D flight had its share of fireworks today as well. With five golfers in the flight the players knew they would have to play well to stand on top of the point standings today. After 18 holes of golf two players were tied for the lead. So George Story and Brain Gale headed off the play some more. In the end Brain Gale was able to hold on for his first victory on the GolfWeek Amateur Tour.

Congratulations to all the winners today. We hope to see everyone in two weeks at Eagle’s Pointe; February 26th. Remember to keep a look out on FaceBook for specials and updates.
